The other day I was looking through some contests and came across a new one – a beach baby contest! Now I thought this would be very cute as I my own kids always look gorgeous with brightly coloured hats and swimmers on and I realised that this is fantastic contest to enter as it is all about colour and about fun so is a great one for babies that are a little bit shyer as the beach often brings out expressions of wonder at the sea, or excitement over a bucket and spade.
So if you live near a beach I would recommend taking advantage of this, and when you go try to take some shots which include as much colour and brightness as possible (and use ISO 100 film), and bring in some aspects to capture those special moods of your baby. The pictures will be amazing believe me.

If you are just starting out then the very best thing you can do is to enter some free baby photo competitions. These will give you a small but highly illuminating understanding of the baby modeling industry and they will offer up an opportunity to see if this is an area that you would like to pursue in the longer term without any need to put up any cash. Of course it is also a great opportunity to earn some money for your childs college fund.

The biggest advantage in free baby photo competitions is that they are FREE, the biggest disadvatage is that this means that they therefore have a higher level of participation and thereby more competition to achieve the prize. The prize however can vary quite dramatically so you can make some good money. As there is no layout you can also enter as many of these as you like. The quality varies a lot but oyu have nothing to lose so get started now.

If you are more artistic or would like your child to be involved in something a bit more interesting than the standard business advertising campaigns, then a good option is to try baby photo art. This field is a bit harder to find contacts for, and may not pay nearly as well – in fact there are a lot of artisits that are looking for volunteers. However, the benefit is that you will usually recieve a copy of the works in place of payment and this can be spectacular and a really beautiful momento for you and your family.
So if you get the chance then I recommend doing this at least one just for the fun of it. Of course take all the usual precautions and find out exactly what the artwork is about, but otherwise just have some fun.

The ultimate in work that you can get in this industry is to be involved in baby modeling commercials and you should do whatever it takes to be involved if at all possible. The reasons for this are:

1. Commercials will usually pay a premium above that of a standard photo shoot
2. They tend to be shown in more locations and at various times meaning you get a royalty cheque more often so that you are still receiving money long after the actual commercial was shot (this depends on the contract)
3. You will get a higher level of exposure which can lead to other high level or simply better quality set of work.
4. There may be opportunities for your child to develop and try acting or be animated rather than just sitting still for the camera. This is more fun for your baby and will let you and everyone else know where this may lead in the future.

So the day arrives and your child is the baby photo winner of the hour. Congratulations! The question is what do you do now? Well first off you will be contacted by the contest organisers and usually paid via cheque. But what you really want to do is to use that win to attract other wins and other jobs, so the first thing you need to do is to ensure you have a copy of the winning photo/s and to start creating your baby modeling portfolio. This will include the title that the picture has won and any details that may be relevant. You can then build on this with every new win you acheive.

The second step is to speak to the organisers and to see if there are any affiliates or jobs that are associated with the competitions that you can then use and start the promotion process.

One of the most successful ways to win the baby picture contests is to do something a little big different and one that I particularly like is using a set of shots that represent each month of the year, like what you would see in a baby photo calendar. This can be incredibly cute but also provides an identifiable theme to each shot which makes the viewer comfortable and also get involved as they want to see what the next picture will be. For instance, christmas may be dressed as santa by the tree whilst April may be in a basket with Easter eggs.

What’s even better is that at the end of it all, whether you win or lose you will still have the set of shots and can create your own baby photo calendar to send to family and friends.

As discussed previously, baby modeling and acting go very well hand in hand and an acting career is often a natural progression from modeling at ANY age. The reason for this I find is that the acting provides an outlet for the individual to present themselves as personalities over and above their looks and to allow themselves more expression.
But before you present your child for this next step you need to consider if this is suitable for your child. If you think about the time and effort that it takes to be involved in modeling, then it is the same in acting but two-fold. The pressure is on, the criticism is high and your childs disposition becomes a lot more important as they do not use as many babies so they can’t just edit your child out as easily. But if your baby is a naturally buoyant personality and enjoys modeling then give it a try.

A lot of parents get their children into the baby modeling industry but then start to think where to from here? Well one of the best avenues is to join a baby acting agency. Obviously a baby is not able to do much to begin with, but by enrolling at a young age you give your child the best chance of feeling confident in front of the camera and learning to take direction from the photographers and cameramen. I find that children from this industry are usually very confident. However please do not indulge your child too much as I also find these children can become self-centred so you need to watch that!

The other benefit of this area is that the salaries are a lot higher for an form of acting and particularly when they are old enough to speak.

Online baby photo contests are by far the easiest of all contests to enter and best of all they also have some of the highest reader rates available. Because of this they are able to offer higher cash payments for the winners and also provide a great level of publicity so that you have the potential to be discovered and propelled into stardom in other areas of the industry. This is particularly true of well know competitions such as ‘cutekid’ which offer a very high profile site and are known throughout the industry.

Finally, you will find that a lot of the online baby picture contests have numerous competitions throughout the year and therefore provide more opportunities to achieve the top spot which is always nice.

To continue our series on baby models casting calls, the next point to consider is how you are going to present your baby on the day. There are three things that I would recommend that you consider:

Clothing – casting calls are often full of potential candidates that all look the same. Try to be a bit different so that your child stands out from the crowd.

Purpose – many casting calls are set up for a particular campaign or purpose so you should be very aware of what this is about. You can then dress your baby accordingly and ensure that the judges will be able to picture your child in the adverts easily.

Personality – This is the perfect forum for a child to really show their personality but remember there will be a lot going on so you need to be sure your baby is able to cope with crowds and that they are well rested so you will be able to show them at their very best.
